The city’s name, derived from the Javanese words for “shark” (Suro) and “crocodile” (Boyo), is a nod to its rich history and strategic importance as the gateway to iconic volcanoes like Mount Bromo and Mount Ijen.

Your tour starts with a walk through the lively streets of Chinatown and past the famous Red Bridge. From there, you’ll explore Kampung Arab (also known as Ampel), an ancient district still inhabited by the descendants of Arab merchants who introduced Islam to Java centuries ago. Your day begins before sunrise with an early morning excursion to Mount Ijen, home to one of Indonesia’s most incredible natural wonders. After breakfast at your hotel or with a provided breakfast box, you will travel by 4WD jeep for about 1.5 hours to Paltuding Base Camp (1,850m).

The 3-kilometer trek to the crater’s rim follows a well-marked path. As you climb, you’ll be treated to a rewarding view of the stunning, acidic crater lake at the top. The lake is an incredible 200 meters deep and contains about 36 million cubic meters of steaming water. From the rim, you’ll also witness the remarkable strength and resilience of the local sulfur miners as they collect and carry heavy blocks of sulfur up the steep path.

After soaking in the views, you’ll return to the base camp along the same trail. From there, you will drive to Banyuwangi for a well-deserved late lunch at a local restaurant.

In the afternoon, you will head to the Ketapang ferry terminal to begin your scenic journey across the Bali Strait to the island of Bali. The ferry ride to Gilimanuk takes about 45 minutes, with a time difference of one hour between Java and Bali.

Upon arrival in Bali, you will continue your journey by road to your selected hotel in either Pemuteran or Lovina Beach. Your accommodation is not included in this itinerary.

  • Safety First: For your safety, local authorities strictly prohibit walking down to the lake’s edge due to toxic fumes. Only sulfur porters are allowed in this area.
  • Trekking Conditions: This trek requires a good level of physical fitness and appropriate footwear. Be sure to bring warm clothing, as morning temperatures can be very low.
  • Volcanic Activity: Mount Ijen is an active volcano, and access can be restricted without notice. In the event of an closure, an alternative tour of the Kaliklatak coffee and rubber plantation will be provided.
