A grand tour of the most interesting places in Sarawak and Sabah, covering nature, aboriginal culture and wildlife.
Day 1 – Arrival in Kuching – Meet upon arrival at Kuching International Airport and transfer to hotel and check-in. At 2.00pm, depart from your hotel in the city and drive to the Semenggoh Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre situated about 30 minutes drive from Kuching. It provides a rare opportunity to be at close range with the “Wild Man of Borneo” and to observe their behaviours and activities in their natural habitat. Prior to arriving at the feeding platform, you will have a brief experience walking through the amazing untouched rainforest. Afterwards transfer to your hotel.
Day 2- Kuching and surrounding area– After breakfast transfer to Damai Beach where you will board a boat and enjoy a 25minute ride along the Coastline to the Mangroves of Sarawak. You will stop at the river mouth for a approximate 45 minutes in search for the Irrawaddy (or Snub fin) Dolphins. Proceed further with the boat along the Mangrove forest in search for Saltwater Crocodiles which can sometimes be seen on the Riverbank. Another 45 minutes ride and you will arrive at the Satang Islands located off the coast of Santubong. With a packed lunch provided enjoy the beautiful view from the island, relax at the beach or go for a swim or snorkel in the clear water. On the return boat ride to Permai, pass by “Bird’s Rock”. We will slowly pass by the rock for a better impression of this rocky islet which is an important rookery for Black-napped and Bridled terns. After the tour return to your hotel and overnight. From October – March, sea conditions may not allow for the day trip and therefore, the day’s activities will be substituted with a City and Museum Tour, followed by lunch and a visit to the Sarawak Cultural Village *Please note that the boat and Islands excursions are on shared basis to minimise the environmental impact of boats in the fragile mangrove areas of Damai
Day 3 – Kuching to Batang Ai Resort – In the morning meet your guide in the hotel lobby and start your journey to the Longhouse Safari along the Pan Borneo Highway, passing through beautiful sceneries of rural villages, towns and gardens of pepper, rubber and rice fields. A short stop will be made at Serian town (60 km from Kuching) where you can explore the market where the locals selling fruits and vegetables. From Serian your trip will bring you to Lachau where you will have your lunch and the opportunity to buy presents for the Iban families in the Longhouse. After lunch in Lachau your onward journey will bring you to the Batang Ai jetty from where you will cross the lake by boat to the Hilton Batang Ai Longhouse Resort. Check-in and overnight at resort. The Hilton Batang Ai integrates nature, adventure and culture. Located on the shore of a spectacular man-made lake, it has 100 guest rooms, all individually air conditioned, with ceiling fans, private bathrooms and IDD phone. A “Ruai”, the traditional longhouse veranda, provides an unobstructed view of the lake and its surrounding forest. Restaurant, bar, lounge and swimming pool are available.
Day 4 – Batang Ai Lake – At 9.00am depart the hotel and board a boat across the Batang Ai Lake to reach an original Iban longhouse. Tour the longhouse, watch the natives while they organize their daily chores, witness cockfighting and blowpipe demonstrations, and enjoy a ‘native style’ lunch. Return to the resort in the early afternoon. Dinner and overnight at the resort. ( B & L )
Day 5 – Batang Ai Lake to Kota Kinabalu via Kuching – Depart our hotel at approximately 8.30am to Kuching, with a stop where you will be free to choose from the very many vendors for your lunch. Upon arrival, estimated in mid-afternoon, transfer to the airport for flight to Kota Kinabalu (FLIGHTS NOT INCLUDED). Upon arrival in Kota Kinabalu, transfer to hotel and overnight. ( B )
Onward flights from Kuching should not depart earlier than 1730 hrs. We strongly recommend you book the flight MH 3154 1750/2035 OR MH0060 2050/2210.
Day 6 Kota Kinabalu and surrounding area – At 2.00pm depart from Kota Kinabalu on an overland 2 hours drive via coastal highway Kota Kinabalu / Beaufort, towards Southwest part of Sabah and upon arrival, an afternoon tea with snacks await. Depart for a cruise through the tranquillity and serenity of mangroves, nipah palms, scrubs and secondary vegetation. Enjoy the serene setting and nature’s river trail, while the Proboscis Monkeys take a good and staring look at you, quite un-alarmed by your presence. Other wildlife like Macaque Monkeys, the rare silver Langur, birds and reptiles, flying foxes and water buffalos would greet you occasionally, leaving you with a glimpse of nature in its undisturbed form. While returning (weather permitting), watch the sunset as the daylight fades into dusk and thrill yourself to the spectacular experience of hundreds of fireflies lighting up the trees. Upon return to jetty, traditional Malaysian dinner is served before returning to Kota Kinabalu. Overnight at hotel. ( B & D )
Day 7 – Kota Kinabalu to Kinabalu National Park – An early start at 7.30am depart your hotel and enjoy a 3 hour drive to Poring Hot Springs. Poring Hot Spring, a natural wonder where hot sulphur spring bubbles out of the earth and a canopy walkway (41m) span for 157m from tree to tree, a rare opportunity to get a bird’s eye view of the rainforest and a must visit is the Treetop Canopy Walkway. Proceed for lunch at a nearby resort. After lunch, depart to Kinabalu National Park; enjoy the cool and fresh air of the park. Have a visit to the Exhibition Hall, Slide Show and Mountain Garden (One of the biggest attractions at the Park). Then, check in at resort located at Kinabalu National Park and overnight. ( B & L )
Day 8 – Kinabalu National Park to Sandakan – Early morning wake up, breakfast and drive to Sandakan across the ridges of Crocker Range passing native villages and oil palm estate among others. On arrival at Sandakan town, check-in to your accommodation. The rest of the day is at leisure. Overnight at hotel. ( B )
Day 9 – Sandakan and surrounding area – At 8.00am pick up from hotel in Sandakan and drive for approximately 30 minutes to Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre. Proceed to the free roaming area feeding platform to witness the feeding of Orang Utans. At this centre, observe man’s closest relative “the Orang Utan” being rehabilitated to become wild in their natural habitat and experience a walk in the Tropical Lowland Dipterocarp Forest of Borneo. Depart Sepilok and transfer to jetty in Sandakan. At approx. 11.45am, take an hour boat cruise up to the Lower Kinabatangan River Sanctuary where you will take your lunch at Abai Jungle Restaurant. This is a wonderful journey of discovery which starts from the waters of Sulu Sea of Sandakan Town through a magnificent scenery of the Mangrove Forest. After Lunch, free time and relax at our nature boardwalk, make sure to bring along your binoculars. Look out for any moving trees, you might have the chance to spot the wild Orang Utan, Silver leaf monkeys, birds and other wildlife. Later in the afternoon, you’ll be experiencing a cruise to search for more wildlife until the sunsets while enjoying a cup of coffee and by night falls continue the night cruise to witness the fire flies as Christmas tree. Return to the lodge for dinner. After dinner, again experience the “Jungle at night” at our nature boardwalk to search for birds, snakes, insects and other wildlife with our nature guide. Overnight at Abai Jungle Lodge. ( B, L & D )
Day 10 – Sandakan to Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge – Wake up by the calls of nature. Early morning take a river trip to Pitas Lake to observe wildlife’s and experience the unique of Pitas Lake. After breakfast, you are invited to join our tree planting project with the locals, enjoy a simple lunch arranged by the villagers at Abai village. This project specially design to help the locals. After lunch, cruise UP River to Sukau village in search of primates especially the wild Orang Utan, birds, pygmy elephant and other wildlife. Arrive Sukau, check in at Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge. Late afternoon, take another river cruise to Menanggul River, a small tributary of the Kinabatangan. Return lodge for dinner and overnight at Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge. ( B, L & D )
Day 11: Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge return to Sandakan – After breakfast, river cruise down by boat back to Sandakan. Another chance for wildlife sightings with this approximately 2.5 hour’s journey. Upon arrival at jetty, Visit to the biggest and the busiest Central Market located at the heart of Sandakan with nice Sea view, not forgetting to drop by the Souvenir shop in front of market. An early lunch is served. After lunch, proceed to the airport or hotel. ( B & L )
