Kota Kinabalu - Touring Options

Classical Sabah 6 Days / 5 Nights – Departs every Sunday

Day 01 – Kota Kinabalu –  Meet and greet at Kota Kinabalu Airport and transfer to hotel.  At 1400hrs, depart from Kota Kinabalu on an overland 2 hours drive towards Southwest part of Sabah. Upon arrival, an afternoon tea with snacks awaits.  Depart for a cruise through the mangroves, nipah palms, scrubs and secondary vegetation. Enjoy the serene setting while the Proboscis Monkeys take a good and staring look at you, quite unalarmed by your presence.  Other wildlife like Macaque Monkeys, the rare silver Langur, birds and reptiles, flying foxes and water buffalos would greet you occasionally. The cruise will take a pleasant 1½ hours approximately and upon return to jetty, traditional Malaysian dinner is served before returning to Kota Kinabalu.

Day 2 – Kota Kinabalu to Kinabalu National Park – At 0730hrs, pick up from hotel in Kota Kinabalu and transfer to Poring Hot Spring in 3 hours drive. Poring Hot Spring, a natural wonder where hot sulphur spring bubbles out of the earth and a canopy walkway (41m) span for 157m from tree to tree, a rare opportunity to get a bird’s eye view of the rainforest. A must visit is the Treetop Canopy Walkway.  Proceed for lunch at a nearby resort. After lunch, depart to Kinabalu National Park. Have a visit to the Exhibition Hall, Slide Show and Mountain Garden (One of the biggest attractions at the Park). Then, proceed to resort to check-in. (B, L, D)

Day 3 – Kinabalu National Park to Sandakan – Early morning wake up, breakfast and drive to Sandakan across the ridges of Crocker Range passing native villages and oil palm estate among others. On arrival at Sandakan town, check-in to your accommodation.  The rest of the day is at leisure. (B)

Day 4 – Sandakan to Abai Jungle Lodge – Pick up from hotel in Sandakan and drive for approximately 30 minutes to Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre. Proceed to the free roaming area feeding platform to witness the feeding of Orang Utans.  Depart Sepilok and transfer to jetty in Sandakan to take an hour boat cruise up to the Lower Kinabatangan River Sanctuary where you will take your lunch at Abai Jungle Restaurant.  After Lunch, free and relax at our nature boardwalk,  Later in the afternoon, you’ll be experiencing a cruise to search for more wildlife until the sunsets while enjoying a cup of coffee and by night falls continue the night cruise to witness the fire flies as Christmas tree. Return to the lodge for dinner. After dinner, again experience the “Jungle at night” at our nature boardwalk to search for birds, snakes, insects and other wildlife with our nature guide. Overnight at Abai Jungle Lodge.

Day 5 – Abai Jungle Lodge to Sukau – Early morning take a river trip to Pitas Lake to observe wildlife’s and experience the uniqueness of Pitas Lake.  After breakfast, you are invited to join our tree planting project with the locals, enjoy a simple lunch arranged by the villagers at Abai village.  After lunch, cruise up river to Sukau village in search of primates especially the wild Orang Utan, birds, pygmy elephant and other wildlife. Arrive Sukau, check in at Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge. Late afternoon, take another river cruise to Menanggul River, a small tributary of the Kinabatangan before returning to the lodge for dinner. Day 6 – Sukau to Sandakan –  After breakfast, river cruise down by boat back to Sandakan. Another chance for wildlife sightings with this approximately 2.5 hour’s journey. Upon arrival at jetty, visit to the biggest and the busiest Central Market located at the heart of Sandakan with a nice Sea view. An early lunch is served. After lunch, proceed to the airport or hotel to conclude your tour. (B, L)

Kinabalu Mountain Climb 3 Days / 2 Nights

Day 01 – Kota Kinabalu to Kinabalu National Park – At 0700 hrs, pick up at the hotel lobby and depart for Poring Hot Springs, located 3 hrs drive from Kota Kinabalu town. Drive across the ridges of the Crocker Range and enjoy spectacular mountain scenery. Poring Hot Springs major attraction are the open air sulphur baths, located in a beautifully landscaped garden. A canopy plank-walk enables to experience and observe the jungle from a different point of view. Proceed to the hot sulphur pools where one may soak in the hot water. Depart to Kinabalu National Park. The park is a paradise for botanists, bird watchers and nature lovers, being home to several plant species, some of which are found only in this area. Lunch at a local mountain lodge. Proceed for a guided walk through some of the several park trails. The guide will point out the various plants identifying the many species of orchid, rhododendrons, pitcher plants and ferns found among the oak and chestnut forest. Check in to hotel. Dinner and overnight at the hotel. (L/D)

Day 02 – Kinabalu National Park to Mount Kinabalu – After breakfast, drive to park headquarters. Proceed by car to the Power Station, at 1829 m above sea level. The summit trail starts from here. Participants will be assisted by the guide who will lead the climb together with a Park Ranger. During the climb it is interesting to observe the change in the vegetation, passing from oak forest to mossy forests, to bamboo and fern trees forests. There are several shelters where it is possible to rest before continuing. A picnic lunch is provided. The arrival at Laban Rata Resthouse, at 3353 m. above sea level, is estimated at about 1600 hrs. Rest of the day to relax after the long climb. Dinner and overnight at the resthouse. (B/L/D)

Day 03 – Mount Kinabalu return to Kota Kinabalu – Morning call is given at 0200 hrs. After a light breakfast, start the last part of the climb. Departure is estimated at around 2.45 hrs. The trail is well marked but a good torchlight is recommended. The final trek is on bare granite rock surface. Reach the summit, at 4098 m above sea level, in time for the sun rising over a spectacular view of the surrounding forests. Following the same trail, descend back to Laban Rata for a well deserved meal. After a short rest, start the trek down to the Power Station and proceed by van to the park headquarters. A certificate is given to those who reach the summit. Lunch at the Mountain Lodge. At 1400 hrs, return to Kota Kinabalu. (B/L).

Suggested items to bring along : backpack, comfortable trekking shoes, raincoat, insect repellent, wool hat, gloves, wool socks, windbreaker, torchlight, water bottle, personal medicines, personal toiletries, swim wear, towel, a change of clothes, chocolate.

Although the climb is technically easy, a good level of fitness is required to complete it. Temperature can reach 0° Celsius during the night. It is important for all participants to be properly equipped.

Sabah at a Glance 3 Days / 2 Nights

This short tour of Sabah is well paced yet busy enough to visit the highlights whilst remaining very good value for money for those looking for a short break.
